Digital downloading has transformed the way people listen to music. With the advent of MP3 players and, in particular, the iLovely iPods, it is entirely possible to have a playlist for every conceivable occasion and endlessly bathe your ears in soundwaves.

It's not only the availability of designer technology that explains the global appetite for round-the-clock listening; more importantly, it is the innate power of song that captures the heart and the imagination. Songs are more than the treble clef of notation: they can embody emotions and experiences, they can recall memories and expound truths, they can respect or damage relationships and they can mark significant encounters of the natural and the spiritual. Reformer Martin Luther, a gifted musician and composer, says, 'The riches of music are so excellent and so precious that words fail me whenever I attempt to discuss and describe them. Next to the word of God, the noble art of music is the greatest treasure in the world. It controls our thoughts, minds, hearts, and spirits.'

The very first attribute of God's character revealed to us in the Bible is creativity and, as people made in the image of God, we inherit his amazing ability to create - in other words, to make something happen. It is integral to our design - and music makes something happen! Furthermore, the language of the Psalms repeatedly describes how the universe is sounding out an anthem of praise to its designer. Is it any wonder that the act of making music and singing songs has been incorporated into cultures throughout history and across time zones, tribes and tongues in myriad wonderful and diverse ways?

The Bible contains songs of passion from psalmists, Levites consumed with the presence of God, armies announcing holy victories, humble servants honouring angelic visitations; even the Messiah is singing to his death. Colossians 3:16 encourages us to 'teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts'. Truths, tales and tribulations can all be sung, so let us tune in and join the song.
